How to Prevent the Oral Problem

There are a number of different types of probe. Although they can look scary, they are simply used to explore the mouth and make sure everything is in order. A sickle probe is used to locate any cavities and other such oral issues, while a periodontal probe is used to measure the periodontal pockets and identify any problems such as gum recession.

Teeth may be hard on the outside but under the enamel they are incredibly sensitive so in order to operate without causing you any pain, your dentist will need to administer a local anaesthetic to numb your mouth. Some of our practices now have pain free sedation which means you don’t even know your tooth has been numbed.

The dental syringe is used to administer local anaesthetic to numb your teeth and gums so your dentist may perform procedures that might otherwise be painful for you. Syringes are also used to rinse or dry your mouth with water and air respectively, which is necessary for certain procedures. Syringes can hurt at first. The good news is, only for a second and the even better news is some of our practices now have pain free sedation, so you don’t even know your tooth is being numbed.

Dental scalers are used to physically remove calculus from above the gum line. Sometimes plaque hardens to the point where it cannot be removed by brushing so it needs to be carefully scraped out with these instruments.

Brush natural teeth with fluoride toothpaste for two minutes twice a day and clean in between the teeth at least once a day.  Clean and soak dentures (full or partial) daily.  Brush and massage the gums, either with a soft toothbrush or with a warm, damp cloth.

“Good oral health is essential to total health and the key to a happy and productive life,” says Gerry Cool, president of the Canadian Dental Hygienists Association (CDHA). Research suggests that gum disease is a risk factor for serious life-threatening illnesses such as diabetes, lung and heart disease, and stroke. “Resolving to make oral health a priority in your daily life is an investment in your future,” adds Cool, noting that everyone can set oral health goals and develop new habits in 2017.
